The third edition of the APS Mdina Cathedral Contemporary Art Biennale will be inaugurated on 13 March and held over the course of one month, until 18 April 2020. The biennale is under the artistic direction of Professor Giuseppe Schembri Bonaci.

The Biennale takes the form of an international collective contemporary art exhibition in which new works will be installed in the Baroque setting of the Mdina Cathedral Museum, alongside its vast permanent collection of artworks and objets d’art.

This year’s theme, Regaining a Paradise Lost: The Role of the Arts, will deal with the relationship between spirituality and the environment, focusing on links with the protection of the planet, all species, human or otherwise, and the notion of spirituality within this seminal debate.

Life, death, genocides, massacres, genetic engineering, globalised information technology, mass appropriation and the destruction of habitats are a reality of our modern surroundings. How are artists confronting this radical and real apocalyptic threat?

This question will be answered in the exhibition, which will feature works from both local and international artists. Participants hail from Malta, the United Kingdom, Serbia, Germany, Austria, Italy, Australia, Japan, Malaysia, Israel, Macedonia, Greece, and others. Their participation attests to the significance of the debate presented by the theme to global audiences.

In addition to the permanent collection and the display of works by international contemporary artists, the Biennale will also feature an exhibition of metal sculptures by Maltese artist Toni Pace.
