Masquerade’s production of Patrick Marber’s Closer will open the 2019 season at the dynamic Blue Box theatre.
The 2019 theatre season at the one-of-a-kind venue Blue Box is soon to kick off with a production of Patrick Marber’s multi-award-winning play, Closer.
Staged by top local theatre company Masquerade Malta, Closer is a must-see black comedy of sex, honesty and betrayal that has touched audiences since the play premiered in London in 1997.
Winning both the Olivier BBC Award for Best New Play and the Evening Standard’s Best Comedy Award, Closer has become an international success, having been translated into 30 languages and even being adapted for the big screen, in a movie starring Julia Roberts, Jude Law, Natalie Portman and Clive Owen.

The classic play is the ideal choice to follow Masquerade’s highly-acclaimed recent production of Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus, which delighted audiences in Malta’s national theatre, the Teatru Manoel, and maintained the company’s reputation for producing professional-quality theatre events in Malta for over 20 years.
“As a big fan of Patrick Marber’s work, we are very happy to have obtained the rights to perform this play in Malta,” says Masquerade’s artistic director Anthony Bezzina. “We are delighted to be staging Closer as Masquerade’s next production of the season, this time at our intimate theatre space, Blue Box.”
In Closer, Bezzina will be directing a highly-experienced local cast of performers including Mikhail Basmadjian, Jean-Marc Cafa, Nadia Vella and Alexandra Camilleri Warne, who will be playing the play’s four central characters of Dan, Alice, Anna and Larry as they struggle to find intimacy while their lives hilariously intertwine.
The actors will inhabit a simplistic set designed by Aldo Moretti, which will highlight Marber’s expressive use of language and make the most of the Blue Box’s atmospheric theatre space.
Masquerade Malta’s production of Closer by Patrick Marber will be performed at Blue Box – M Space, Oscar Zammit Street, Msida on 1, 2, 8, 9, 10 February 2019. All shows start at 8pm and are suitable for mature audiences only. Tickets are available by visiting www.masquerademalta.com
