Originally composed by leading avant-garde Italian composer Luciano Berio.

BerBerio is the much-anticipated children’s performance (age 6+) by Zonzo Compagnie (Belgium) that forms part of the Malta International Arts Festival (MIAF) 2019, produced by Festivals Malta. The one-off production will take place at 6pm on 12 July at the Valletta Campus Theatre (ex-MITP) in Valletta, and tickets are in high demand.

The MIAF has become a core part of the Maltese arts scene year in and year out, and it has long served as a performance platform for local and international artists. Under the new artistic direction of composer Ruben Zahra, blending innovation with accessibility, BerBerio is a perfect fit. Throughout the performance of BerBerio, the musicians and artists turn the world of music on its head. They shake musical borders and guide the audience through the musical universe of avant-garde Italian composer Luciano Berio and his muse and talented wife Cathy Berberian. As spectators and participants in this innovative musical journey, children and adults alike are left with an understanding that the world of music is an endless stream of creative possibilities.

The BerBerio stage is home to the ensemble Revue Blanche, who recently won the Klara prize for young talent. Together with Letizia Renzini, an Italian multidisciplinary artist and stage director, the musicians put on an extraordinary display of artistic innovation and creativity. The world of Luciano Berio is transformed into a beautiful multi-media performance, featuring on-point stage direction, operatic voices, musical instruments such as the flute, harp and viola, and profoundly impactful lighting and stage design.

Zonzo Compagnie specialises in the creation of fascinating performances inspired by intriguing musicians and composers.
