The Malta Society of Arts (MSA) has just launched its new schedule of summer courses, with lessons to take place throughout July and August. Over 30 different classes will offer training in several visual and applied arts, as well as performing arts for students of all ages. All classes will take place at the MSA’s seat, the stunning Palazzo de La Salle in the heart of Valletta.
Applications are out, and students can now apply online through the MSA’s newly launched website. Earlier this year, the MSA inaugurated a brand-new design for its website as part of its 100 years at Palazzo de La Salle celebrations. The new online system has already proven popular with MSA’s patrons, who can now browse a modern and accessible platform with up-to-date information about all MSA’s activities. The site also boasts an online payment facility, among other useful features.
The new courses schedule includes a course that is only offered in summer – Drama for Fun, aimed at kids aged between 10 and 15, and taught by known local actor Emanuel Cassar. The timetable also includes violoncello lessons, which are being offered in summer for the first time since a new violoncello and violin teacher, Kristina Dimic, joined the dedicated team of teachers at the MSA at the beginning of this year. The performing arts section is completed with courses in Pianoforte and Guitar (Electric, Acoustic and Classical). During these music lessons, students are taught in very small groups or one-on-one for enhanced interaction with the instructor and a deeper understanding of the instrument. Students are tutored in posture, technique, repertoire, and in the relationship between theory and practice.
The visual arts section offers art courses for kids of all ages, ranging from four to 15 years, as well as for young people and adults from 16 years onwards. Another class, titled Art for Leisure, is aimed at those who want to practise art as a pastime, while Art for Mature students caters for participants of a more advanced age. All the content in the various courses is specifically designed to cater for the different ages and levels of experience.
The visual arts schedule also includes two separate Clay Modelling courses for kids and teens in their respective age brackets, while the ever-popular Nude Figure class offers a live model at each session. The visual arts section is completed by a Portraiture workshop in the shape of a more informal setting for groups of like-minded artists who wish to meet and create together, without the need of tutors, in the presence of a live model.
As regards applied arts, or as they are commonly known, crafts, the MSA offers classes in Crochet, Dressmaking, Embroidery, Knitting, Lace Making, Sewing for Beginners and Tailoring. Advocating against the loss of some of the more traditional arts and crafts, the MSA is proud to continue to offer these courses and help in their sustainability for the future.
Commenting on the launch of the new summer courses schedule, MSA President Arch. Adrian Mamo stated: “One very important aspect of the Malta Society of Arts since its inception in 1852, has been its pivotal role as an arts education organisation, and we are incredibly proud to still offer courses in the various artistic fields to this day.”
