The Shrinking Violets is soon to stage its first show in three years since its production of Jamboy during ŻiguŻajg Festival 2019.

Playing at The Theatre Next Door on 3-5 and 10-12 February 2023, the popular theatre collective’s production of In Other Words features Jes Camilleri and Denise Mulholland, in her much-anticipated return to performance.

“We are excited to bring back The Shrinking Violets for our first production following the pandemic,” says the show’s director Chiara Hyzler. “In Other Words is as sweet as it is bitter; a love story with a poignant twist. Since music is such an important element of this story, the wonderful Matteo Depares has created an original soundscape for the production. And it is an honour to direct Denise Mulholland in her return to the stage, in a play that really makes the most of her talent as an actor.”

Connected by the music of Frank Sinatra, Matthew Seager’s In Other Words follows Arthur and Jane, whose love story has blossomed since they first met – or ‘the incident’, as they call it now. But times, and their minds, have changed. Taking an intimate, humorous and deeply moving journey in and out of their memories of married life, the play explores the cruelty of Alzheimer’s disease and the transformative power of music in our lives.

Director Chiara Hyzler and actor Denise Mulholland are two of the five leading female theatre practitioners who make up The Shrinking Violets, alongside Maria Buckle, Jo Caruana and Cathy Lawlor. Each one a performer with professional experience in directing and creative production, the Violets collaborate with other local and international artists to bring to Maltese audiences new, thought-provoking and high-quality theatre productions. Before Jamboy, the collective also received critical acclaim in October 2017 for Ernest and the Pale Moon by Oliver Lansley and in October 2018 for Us/Them by Carly Wijs.

The Shrinking Violets production of In Other Words by Matthew Seager will play at The Theatre Next Door, Maghtab, on 3-5 and 10-12 February 2023. Tickets are available at https://tnd.com.mt/. This production is supported by Theatre Next Door.
